Sacred Name

Sacred Name

Sacred Name gives the whole canvas over to a single word. Against a near-black ground, राम is written again and again, in Devanagari and in other Indian scripts, in green, orange, silver and white, scattered among beaded vines, small blue blooms and a drift of stars. Where the rest of the collection fills every inch, this one leaves the dark open and lets the name repeat across it.

The Story

There is a devotional practice in which the name is written rather than spoken, set down over and over until the writing becomes the prayer and the page becomes the offering. Sacred Name takes that practice as its entire subject. There is no figure here, no throne, no attending court: only राम, repeated across a near-black ground in Devanagari and in other Indian scripts, in green and orange and silver and white, one large white utterance at the centre and hundreds of smaller ones drifting outward. The same name in many hands, many alphabets, many sizes, saying one thing.

The restraint is the point, and it is deliberate. Where the rest of the collection covers every inch, this piece leaves the dark ground open and places each element with space around it: beaded vines trailing in dusty pink, small blue blooms, a scatter of silver stars, a few blocks of orange and violet pattern. Read from across a room it resolves into a night sky; read from close range it becomes legible, word by word. Every letter is formed by hand in seed beads and fine threadwork on cotton, which means each one is slightly different from the next, exactly as handwriting would be.

Sacred Name is part of KURU's Sacred Threads collection, created under the artistic direction of Shantnu Sihag, trained at Istituto Marangoni and Rubelli Venice. Each artwork is entirely hand-embroidered, and the intricacy of materials and technique means no two pieces can ever be truly identical. Every artwork carries its own character, impossible to replicate exactly by hand, and is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
The Artwork

Each piece is entirely hand-embroidered by master artisans, using techniques passed through generations. Because every stitch is done by hand, small variations between pieces are part of its character — not a flaw, but a signature of authentic craftsmanship.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth — never a wet cloth or liquid cleaner — and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity to preserve embroidery colour and thread integrity. Handle it by its frame rather than the embroidered surface itself, and for any deep cleaning, consult a textile conservator rather than attempting to wash or iron it.

Shipping & Delivery

As each artwork is made to order, please allow for the hand-embroidery timeline shown above before dispatch. Once ready, pieces are carefully packed and shipped via courier, with tracking shared as soon as your piece is on its way.

Framing & Installation

Artworks arrive ready to hang, framed and secured. For larger pieces, we recommend professional installation, hung away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the embroidery over time.
